Here are three views of the famous funerary mask found in the tomb with King Tutankhamun — better known as King Tut — an Egyptian pharaoh from the 18th dynasty, who ruled from around 1332 to 1323 BCE (Before Current Era).

According to the history of ancient Egypt, he lived during one of the most lavish periods of the Egyptian Empire.,

Although King Tut is not considered an extremely important king in terms of the Egyptian monarchy, the reason he’s so well-known today is that his tomb and its contents were discovered virtually intact back in the 1920s.

Inside, buried underground, were priceless objects, furniture, jewels — and lots and lots of gold. (Find out more of the story here: When King’s Tut’s tomb was first opened, here’s how the world reacted to the wonders inside.)

This young king was just 12 years old when he married, and died at age 18 or 19. Analysis of his mummy and the artwork in his tomb tells us that Tutankhamun was probably considered a handsome teen, and he stood about 5’6″ tall, with refined features and long eyelashes.

The Pharaoh’s mummy, its face masked in gold and toes capped with golden sandals, was placed inside four different coffins fitted inside each other.

The coffin lids had portraits of the dead king, wearing the royal headdress decorated on the forehead with the serpent of Lower Egypt, and the vulture’s head of Upper Egypt.

The original mask of Tutankhamun found in Egypt was made of solid gold, and weighed more than 20 pounds.
