Exploring the world of airplanes
Airplanes are fascinating machines that have captured the imagination of people for over a century. For a young child, an airplane is not just a mode of transport — it’s a magical vehicle that can fly high in the sky, far above the clouds.
Airplanes come in various shapes and sizes, each designed for specific purposes. Some are small and fast, perfect for aerobatics, while others are large and capable of carrying hundreds of passengers across oceans.
How do planes fly?
The basic principles of flight involve four forces: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. Lift is the upward force created by the airplane’s wings. Weight is the force of gravity pulling the airplane toward the ground. Thrust is the force that moves the airplane forward, usually created by engines. Drag is the resistance an airplane feels as it moves through the air. All these forces work together to make an airplane fly.
Parts of a plane
Airplanes also have fascinating parts like the cockpit, where pilots control the plane, and the fuselage, the main body of the airplane. There are also the wings, which provide lift, and the tail, which helps to stabilize and steer the plane. Understanding these basic concepts can turn a simple airplane drawing into an educational experience.

- Airplane mobile: Using an airplane drawing for inspiration, create an airplane mobile using cardstock or felt to cut out airplane shapes. Paint and decorate the airplanes, then hang them from a hanger or a homemade mobile frame using string at different lengths.
- Runway placemat: Use a large sheet of paper or a roll of butcher paper to draw a runway complete with markings. Your child can use this placemat for meal times, or to play with their toy airplanes.

- Flight path mapping: Show your child a world map and discuss where they would like to fly. You can talk about different countries and their cultures, enhancing their geography and social studies knowledge.
- Aerodynamics experiment: Create paper airplanes of different shapes and sizes, and experiment to see how each design affects the flight. This is a great way to introduce basic principles of aerodynamics and physics.
- Sound barrier education: Discuss the sound barrier and how jets break it. You can demonstrate with a balloon pop or a snapping rubber band to represent the sonic boom.
- Airport scavenger hunt: If you have a chance to visit an airport, create a scavenger hunt list of things to find, like types of airplanes, airport jobs, and airline logos. This can be a fun and educational outing.
