ToggleWhat are musical notes?
Musical notes are symbols that tell musicians how to play a piece of music.
Think of them as the building blocks of music.
Each note has a pitch, which tells you how high or low the sound should be, and a duration, indicating how long the sound should last.
There are several types of notes, including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and so on, each with its own shape and name.
The staff and clefs
Notes are written on a set of five lines called a staff.
The clef, found at the beginning of the staff, tells you the pitch range of the notes on the staff.
The two most common clefs are the treble clef and the bass clef, which are used for higher and lower pitch ranges.
